The Hands on Experience

 Name: Ashley Philander
Student number: 3239748

Here will follow a description of my experiences at the Life Sciences 152 Ecology camp 2013 held at Bainskloof.

The camp provided me and my fellow students with the opportunity of studying Ecology hands on. When we had arrived at the venue, only that’s when the excitement in me crept in. My excitement was truly satisfied in the exercises we did. The exercise regarding the water ecology was the exercise I related the most to. This was because of my keen interest in the properties of water; I had also learned for the first time that water with a pH lower than 5 can be used for drinking purposes. The exercise of the tadpoles was also very enjoying especially seeing how the students had to catch the tadpoles. I might add, when it came to me catching, I was always too scared to fall in the ponds. By far the exercise that was most enjoyed was when the students had to present the various activities we had done in the camp. The creativeness of some of my fellow students surprised me the most; I was also inspired to improve in my presenting skills. To top the whole camping experience was the team building exercises, where I personally had to interact with many of my fellow students which I am not used to do in class. The exercises were fun and full of laughter.  I admire the Life Sciences team that made this Ecology camp possible. The only criticism that I have was the weather, but this could not be controlled by anyone at the camp. I will hope that next year’s Life Sciences students find the camp as exciting as I did. Thank you!!!!
